Artist Spotlight Train
February's Spotlight Shines On...
The story of Train begins with a failure. Patrick Monahan was a part of a Led Zeppelin cover band that…... well, failed.
He then packed up his bags and moved to California in 1993. It was there he met Rob Hotchkiss who was performing locally with the band, Apostles. After playing a short time with just the two of them, Hotchkiss on guitar and Monahan on percussion, they recruited Jimmy Stafford on guitar, Charlie Colin on bass and Scott Underwood on drums.
And by 1994, Train was born.
But getting signed wasn’'t that easy. The band was rejected by Columbia Records in 1996. So they decided to put out their self-titled album independently. This turned out to be a smart decision as they were picked up to open for bands like the Barenaked Ladies, Hootie & the Blowfish, Cracker and Counting Crows.
Train, in turn, became their debut album
after they were picked up by Aware and
Columbia Records and was released on
February 24, 1998 with songs like “"Free”", “
"Meet Virginia"” and "“I Am.”"
On March 27, 2001, Train released their
second album, Drops of Jupiter . It was
produced by the great Brendan O’Brien, who
has worked with Pearl Jam, Bob Dylan,
Bruce Springsteen, and Neil Young. The
album features songs like “"Drops of Jupiter”",
which won two Grammys, and “"She’'s on
Fire."”
After collaborating on the band’'s third album, Hotchkiss decided to pursue a solo career. However, he contributed to six of the 11 songs on the album, My Private Nation , which was released in June 2003. “"Calling All Angels”", “"When I Look to the Sky”" and “"Get to Me" were all a part of that album.”
Bassist Charlie Colin left the band in October of that year leaving just three members: Monahan, Underwood and Stafford.
Train released a live album called, Alive at Last , before putting out their fourth album, For Me, It’s You in 2005. Then they immediately turned around and put out a fifth album called Hiatus in 2006.
After three years, 2009 proved to be a defining moment for Train. The band was getting the feeling that they were on their way out of the music scene, but decided to put out what they thought would be their last album. Save Me San Francisco came out on October 27, 2009 and it was a HUGE success. With songs like “"Hey, Soul Sister”", “"If It’'s Love”" and “"Marry Me"” the band came to the realization that their musical time was not over.
In fact, Train is working on a sixth album, which has yet to be named. They have already released the song, "“Drive By"” which climbed the charts almost instantly. It has been confirmed that the titles of other songs are “"The Least I Can Do"” and "“Bruises."” The album is set to release in March or April of this year.
It’'s hard to believe that a band with six albums and incredible success almost threw in the towel. Maybe this next album should be called, “ Success .”
